Civil Ceremony in Birmingham — How It Actually Works

Getting legally married in the UK requires a civil ceremony conducted by a Birmingham City Council registrar. LUXE VENUE is not licensed for civil ceremonies, so the legal marriage itself takes place at a Register Office (typically Birmingham Register Office in the city centre). Once the paperwork is signed, most of our couples come straight to LUXE VENUE in Perry Barr (B44) for the celebration — Nikah, Mehndi, Walima or a full evening reception, all in one venue.

What Is a Civil Ceremony?

A civil ceremony is a non-religious, legally-binding marriage performed by a Birmingham City Council registrar at a licensed venue. Key facts:

• Officiated by a registrar from Birmingham Register Office
• Held at a venue licensed by Birmingham City Council (typically the Register Office itself)
• Two witnesses must be present (over 18)
• No religious content (no Quran, no Bible, no prayers, no hymns)
• Lasts 15–25 minutes
• Marriage certificate signed and registered the same day

Many Muslim and Asian couples hold the civil ceremony at the Register Office in the morning and celebrate their Nikah and reception with us in the afternoon and evening.

How the Day Typically Flows

A common Civil + Nikah + Reception day for our couples looks like:

• 10:00–11:00am: Civil ceremony at Birmingham Register Office (small guest list — immediate family + witnesses)
• 12:00pm: Guests arrive at LUXE VENUE, Perry Barr
• 1:00pm: Nikah ceremony (Islamic religious ceremony) with your Imam
• 2:30pm: Nikah lunch and photos
• 4:00pm: Room reset for the evening reception
• 5:00pm: Reception guests arrive, welcome drinks
• 6:00pm: Speeches, dinner service, dessert
• 8:00pm: DJ, dance floor, photos
• 10:00pm: Music ends — relaxed wind-down and departures by 11pm

How to Book Your Civil Ceremony (At the Register Office)

1. Both partners must attend Birmingham Register Office in person to Give Notice of Marriage — a minimum of 29 days before the ceremony date.
2. Pay the Notice fee (currently around £92 at time of writing — please confirm with the Register Office).
3. Book the civil ceremony slot at the Register Office for your chosen date and time.
4. Then book LUXE VENUE for the same day so your Nikah and reception run straight after.

Fees are set by Birmingham Council and paid to them, not to us. Please confirm the current amounts directly with Birmingham Register Office (birmingham.gov.uk).

What LUXE VENUE Can and Cannot Do

• ✅ Coordinate the timeline so the Register Office → LUXE VENUE flow is seamless
• ❌ We cannot conduct the civil (legal) ceremony — that is done at a Register Office
